Post-Travel Skin Care Essentials

As a lot of you know, I just got back from my trip to Vegas a few days ago. This year I have been prioritizing travel which has been amazing but tiring! One thing I have noticed when I get back from my trips is how dull and dehydrated my skin is. It is especially noticeable after I have sat on a plane for a few hours; I definitely blame the dehydration on the cabin air! After my trip to Spain, I spent the rest of the week trying to give my skin a little love and get it moisturized again. This time around, I wanted to share some of my favorite products to use after returning from a trip. All of these products have been some of my favorites over the past years and months and are perfect for helping to repair your skin after a flight or two.

Dior Hydra Life Fresh Sorbet Creme - This gel creme by Dior has been one of my favorites for a few years now. I buy a new one every year during the Anniversary Sale from Nordstrom. This is a great moisturizer for keeping your skin hydrated and plump. Whenever I feel like I need some extra moisture, I will put this on in addition to my normal daily moisturizer. I always feel like my skin stays moisturized with this on versus some moisturizers where my skin quickly just soaks it all in. In the summer, I will put this in the fridge which helps keep me cool and decrease any puffiness.

Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil - This is the oil that I use almost every night after my toner but before my moisturizer. You only need a few drops so it ends up lasting for a long time! This oil helps refine skin texture while sealing in moisturize and it smells amazing!

The Ordinary “Buffet” - This multi-peptide serum is specifically meant to help tackle dryness, dullness and uneven texture which is exactly what my skin looks like after I travel. I usually put this on in the mornings after my toner and before my moisturizer. Some nights I will also alternate between this and the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil.

VIIcode 02M Oxygen Eye Mask - These are my favorite eye masks to use partly because you can wear them while you sleep! Often I am so busy and do not have a few spare hours to walk around with an eye mask on so putting these on just right before bed has worked really well for me! I love how hydrating they are without being oily or sliding around my face all night! I usually save these for “special occasions” when my under eye area really needs some love which is definitely the case after I travel. Awhile back I wrote a blog post all about these eye masks which you can read here.

VIIcode Oxygen Hydrating Eye Spray - This is one of the newer products by VIIcode and works well with the patches! I will use it on nights when I do not use the patches. I always make sure to take out my contacts and then close my eyes and give each eye a spritz. This spray helps to keep the eye area moisturized which helps my eyes look less tired the next day.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater - I love this mist for whenever I need some extra hydration or moisture on my face. I will sometimes use it in the morning, at night, or in the afternoon when I feel like my make up to look “newer” and is starting to get a bit dry. I love the light smell of this facial spray and love that it is refreshing without making your skin feel tighter as it dries. I usually only will do one spray at a time so each bottle lasts me a few months.

Salishan Resort Weekend

SALISHAN RESORT - March 9 - 10, 2019

As you all know, last weekend I got out of town to the Oregon Coast for a fun girl’s weekend with my blogger besties Julianne and Gia! Oregon is amazing in the fact that there are so many cool places to visit that are all under 3 hours from Portland. The Oregon Coast is one of my favorites and is only a 2 hour drive from the city. The reason for this trip was to celebrate Gia’s birthday and have a chance to all hangout and gather content. Salishan Resort, located south of Lincoln City, graciously hosted us for the weekend which was absolutely amazing! We also got the pleasure of driving down in this Voodoo Blue 4runner TRD Pro that was lent to us by Toyota.

After stopping by Starbucks and the beach on our way south, we arrived to Salishan at about 2pm. I did get a few questions about what the pink drinks are that we got, and they are the Starbucks Mango Dragonfruit Refreshers with coconut milk. So refreshing and I love how fruity they were!.

When we got to Salishan, they had two conjoining rooms waiting for us with some champagne and cupcakes. In each room were two full sized beds, a fireplace and an outside deck overlooking the forest and expansive golf course. Although there were other rooms right next to ours as well as above, we never once saw or heard our neighbors which was really nice! Thinking back, although there were other guests around the resort, I don’t think we talked to a single person during our stay besides the Salishan staff.

By the time we had checked into our rooms and unpacked our stuff, we were starving!! We drove back to main building where the two restaurants are located. The Sun Room is the fancier of the two and located on the ground floor right off the main entrance. By the looks of it, the Sun Room is a little fancier with a formal, sit-down atmosphere. On the second level of the main building is The Attic. They both have the same menu but The Attic is more casual with a bar and bar stools on one wall and also an outdoor seating option. The deck outside helps bring a ton of natural light into the room which was so nice after all the rain we had had. Both places served the same menu but they did have different hours. When we arrived to have lunch, it was around 4pm so only The Attic was open which is where we had our lunch.

All of our food was absolutely amazing!! Honestly one of my favorite parts about this trip was the food! For lunch we ordered the local fish tacos, the steamed clams, the crispy brussels sprouts, the salishan burger and the clam chowder (clockwise). I’m a huge fan of brussel sprouts and these ones were amazing! I ended up ordering my own serving for dinner! This was also my first time ordering clams and they were surprisingly good! I’m not a huge shellfish person but I couldn’t pass up eating at least some seafood while we were at the coast! We weren’t ready to starting drinking yet so I ordered a freshly squeezed raspberry lemonade and Julianne and Gia got “mystery drinks.”

After lunch, we checked out the bike rentals at the front desk and then headed to Lincoln City to watch the sunset! The bike rentals are completely free and in the summer, Salishan is also adding a rope course and a zip line! We have already decided that we need to come back for that! We totally lucked out with the weather because it had been snowing the night before at my place in SW Portland. So to have sun and clear skies was so refreshing! We then made it back to the resort just in time for Gia’s birthday dinner up at The Attic again. This time we did get some alcoholic drinks and our waitress had the best suggestions! Julianne got one with chocolate liqueur that arrived on fire and I got the Magic Mickey which had a shot that made the whole drink change colors!

Sunday morning was Spring Forward so we took our time getting up and ready before packing our stuff. Even though the rooms are separate buildings away from the main building, they do still offer room service! For breakfast we ordered some mimosas, breakfast sandwiches and pastries and hung around in the comfy robes on our two decks.

After we packed up the car, we headed across the street to the Spa! When we got there, the staff was so welcoming and had been expecting us. Right away they got us set up with spa robes, sandals and lockers for our stuff before giving us a tour around the facility.

Down the hall from the Women’s Locker Room were private showers, sinks and fully stocked hair products and styling tools. On this side of the spa was the women’s only amenities that included a sauna, steam room and then this beautiful heated pool (pictured below). The pool overlooked the lawn and Siletz Bay.

After spending some time in this indoor pool, we headed outside to the infinity pool. This section of the spa is open to both genders and there were some lounge chairs outside as well!

Even though we went on a sunny weekend day, the spa was not too crowded or loud. We did see a few other guests using some of the amenities but the spa is definitely geared towards providing “me” time to each visitor.

In addition to massages and facials, the spa also offers nail services, waxing and even cut and color options.

Our last stop at the spa was a room called The Hearth. It is technically the “waiting room” if you are getting a service but there is also a lounge area s well. Two of the walls are made completely of glass and give an amazing view of the surrounding nature and the bay. Set up at the front of the room are a row of lounge chairs where you can sit back, relax and sip on some wine or champagne.

At the back of the room is a fireplace and some surrounding chairs and magazines to read while you wait. This is the only room where you are allowed to drink and the staff is great about bringing you your choice of red, white and sparkling wine.

Overall the weekend was so fun but way too short! Since we were working most of the time to create content, we did not get to relax as much as we had hoped. This trip definitely has us already talking about our next girls trip which will hopefully be sooner rather than later. I know all of us want to go back to Salishan with family or friends for a longer stay especially when the weather is even nicer! For anyone looking for a relaxing getaway or a girls weekend, I highly recommend Salishan! It was a literal dream and there are so many fun things to do at the resort and in the neighboring beach towns. This resort is also dog friendly and you can bring up to two furry, canine friends so it is perfect for the WHOLE family : )

My whole life I have always struggled with my dental health. Sadly I was not blessed with strong enamel so making daily efforts like flossing and using mouth wash is not only important but also necessary. I used to floss at least once a day growing up but part way through College, I got super lazy and just stopped. One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to get back into the habit of flossing every night which I’m proud to say I have kept up!

Up until now I have been brushing my teeth with basic plastic toothbrushes that I buy from Target. I often feel like I need to replace them because I will squish the bristles from vigorously brushing to get all of the food out from between my teeth. It was also hard to judge how long to brush my teeth for and honestly, i was probably cutting the time short. When Smile Brilliant reached out about their cariPRO Ultrasonic toothbrush, I was super stoked to try it out!

If you have never used an electric toothbrush or have not used one in years like me, it can take a bit to get used to the feeling! The cariPro has 5 different settings (Clean, White, Massage, Gum Care and Sensitive) all of which go for a total of 2 minutes. Every 30 seconds, there will be a pause so you know to switch to the next quadrant in your mouth. The 5 settings are:

In my opinion, the first 3 settings were all too aggressive and caused toothpaste to go flying everywhere! After brushing my teeth the first time with this brush, I was feeling pretty discouraged because of how difficult it was to move around in my mouth while still retaining any of the toothpaste. As I moved down the 5 options, I ended up really liking the Gum Care and Sensitive settings!

The toothbrush manual recommends doing 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth (bottom right, bottom left, top right and top left). When I saw that the brush stays on for 2 minutes, I was kind of worried about what a long time that was! By splitting it up into 30 second segments, it makes the time go by SO fast! Now I actually find myself wishing it went longer sometimes! Another worry I had was figuring out when to spit. At first I tried spitting during the 30 second period which, combined with the first 3 powerful settings, meant most of my toothpaste ended up all over my hair. I finally got the hang of it and now I either spit during the brief pause or I will wait to spit at the end of the two minutes.

The biggest differences I noticed was how well the toothbrush cleaned and how smooth my teeth feel. I always floss before brushing and am able to get rid of most of the food that way. Since using this brush, I will notice that it removes pieces of food that my floss wasn’t able to get to. Before, all of that food was staying stuck between my teeth but now I am able to get it out! I also love how smooth and clean my teeth feel afterwards! Throughout the day I can feel when my teeth are dirty because they will not feel perfectly smooth.

I also love how little effort it now takes to brush my teeth. Before I felt like I was constantly moving my arm in a repeated brushing motion which did get a little tiring! With the electric toothbrush, since it moves on its own, all I have to do is move it across my teeth slowly while it does the rest of the work.

Spain: Valencia & Barcelona

As most of you already know, I just got back from my trip to Spain a few days ago. Although I was only there for about 5 days, it was an amazing trip and already has me wanting to go back! The first time I went to Europe was back during the summer of 2015 when I studied abroad in College. That summer I was mainly in Central Europe which left a lot of countries that many Americans visit (Britain, France, Spain etc.) still on my bucket list. What spurred this trip was that one of my friends from College and his girlfriend had moved to Spain to teach English for a year and had generously offered a place to stay for any friends who came to visit. Me and one of my sorority sisters both love traveling and decided to make the trip to Spain happen especially since all 3 of us were friends in College. After all, it isn’t all the time that you have a place in Spain to stay for free!

The weekend we decided on was President’s weekend here in America which meant a 3 day weekend for my friend but sadly not for me. I ended up taking a total of 6 days off from work giving me a vacation of 8 days; Wednesday to the following Thursday. We landed in Barcelona on Friday around noon and flew back to the United States around 6pm on the following Tuesday. For our 5 days in Spain, we split the time between our friends’ town of Tavernes de la Valldigna, Valencia and Barcelona.

VALENCIA

OLD TOWN

Friday evening and Saturday we spent in our friends’ town but then on Sunday, we took the train up to Valencia for the day to explore and see a Football match! The train station dropped us off in Old Town so we explored the streets there. First of all, all of the Architecture was absolutely amazing! Part of the reason I love Europe is because of the buildings how you can be walking down a street, randomly turn a corner and BAM, right in front of you will be some amazing Cathedral or something!

Because we went on a Sunday, most things were closed since that day tends to be reserves solely for family time. Besides stopping to get some coffee (or in my case, some freshly squeezed Valencian Orange Juice), we wandered around the streets and took it all in. In one of the squares, you could see and hear them starting to set up for the Falles celebration that happens next month in the city. One of the main attractions is the Cathedral which luckily was open. We didn’t pay the entry fee but there was the option to pay €3 to climb the 207 stairs to the top of the tower. I definitely recommend doing this because not only are the stairs good cardio, the view from the top is amazing!

CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

The football match wasn’t until about 4:30pm so after Old Town, we headed to the City of Arts and Sciences. Honestly, if you have no idea what that is, go Google it because it is seriously AMAZING! It is ironic just how opposite it is from Old Town! I felt like i had stepped into a whole new, futuristic world. Sadly we did not have time to explore each building especially the Museum of Science but even walking around the complex was an amazing experience! The main buildings in the complex are the opera house, the museum of science and the IMAX cinema. There is also an open structure filed with plants and trees that you can walk through (seen in the last two photos below). The tiles underneath the water are painted a gorgeous aqua color which makes the water appear to be a piercing blue. I’ve never been to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland but the color reminded me of the photos I’ve seen from there!

Next stop was the football game! Although I have been to several Portland Timber’s matches, I feel like watching a live match while in Spain is the real deal. The football match we went to was Valencia CF versus RCD Espanyol. It was a close game and unfortunately ended at a 0-0 tie. If you have the chance while in Spain, I definitely recommend adding a football match to your agenda!

BARCELONA

On Monday morning, we reversed our journey from Friday and headed back up to Barcelona. This journey called for a taxi from our friends’ place to the train station in Tavernes, then another train from Tavernes to Valencia, followed by one more train from Valencia to Barcelona. We ended up missing our train to Valencia by a few minutes and barely made it by Taxi to the Valencia Joaquin Sorolla station in time for our last train! Luckily it all worked out and we arrived in Barcelona around noon. While in Barcelona we stayed at The Moods Catedral Boutique Hostel which I highly recommend! I’ve stayed in quite a few hostels but this one was practically a hotel. There was an amazing receptionist who helped us a ton and we had a private room with a balcony.

SAGRADA FAMILIA

The first stop on our list was the Sagrada Familia. Everyone I talked to that had been to Barcelona, recommended it! We bought our tickets ahead of time which I definitely recommend. They are also pretty strict about being on time for your tour slot so make sure you get their early! The cathedral s pretty big and we had to walk around the whole building before finding the correct entrance. Our time slot was for 2pm which ended up being perfect! The inside is covered with stain glass windows and the sun was streaming through beautifully that afternoon. In addition to the actual cathedral, there is a museum about the history of the building. In total, I would recommend giving yourself 2-3 hours to completely read and see everything.

PARK GÜELL

One of the sights I was most excited to see was Park Güell because the ceramic work always looks amazing in everyone’s photos! The park is definitely out a ways from the central part of the city and sadly there are not any direct Metro lines to get there. We ended up taking the Metro and then walking up the hill to the Park. Next time I am definitely going to bring water because it was a decent walk!

When we got there, we learned that in order to access the Monumental Core section of the park, you have to pay entry to one of the 30 minute time slots. At the time we arrived, there was only room left in the last time slot of the day at 6:00pm; right before the sun was going to go down! The tickets to the park are only €8.50 but I would definitely recommend trying to buy tickets ahead of time if you want to guarantee a ticket.

We were worried about killing the hour and a half before our time slot but the park is huge and we ended up having no trouble finding other things to look at. For example, the more organic structures were outside of the Monumental Core and then the buildings with the famous tiles are inside the Monumental Core. If we had had more time in Barcelona, the park could be a perfect place to spend a whole afternoon and maybe bring a long a picnic.

PALAU DE LA MUSICA CATALANA

We started out having a ton of plans for our last day in Barcelona but had to cut out most of them due to time. One of the places that did make the cut however was this beautiful concert hall. While most people automatically think of Gaudi as the main architect of Barcelona, another famous architect of the city was Lluís Domènech who designed this amazing building. While on our tour of the building, we got to sit in on a children’s concert in the hall which is absolutely stunning. I honestly can’t imagine how it must look from the perspective of a performer standing on the stage. After hearing a few songs, we headed out to the second floor that has the line of tiled pillars that I had seen in many photographs online. I would definitely recommend adding this place to you list of sights especially so you can get a view at another Spanish architect’s work.

MERCADO DE LA BOQUERIA

The last thing we did before heading back to our hostel to grab our bags, was visit the marketplace for lunch. If you have been to Pike Place Market in Seattle, I would say this market was pretty similar. The displays at each stand were absolutely amazing. The front of the marketplace was mostly stands with fruits, fruit cups and juices. As you moved further back, there were stands with meat and cheese pastries, seafood and meat. My favorite stands were probably the ones displaying all of the candy! The prices were a little steeper at the market but I would say it is worth it for the experience!

Overall my trip was short but sweet and has me longing to go back to Europe for longer! Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions for places to visit! FAQ for a Bunny Mom

Owning a Bunny - Everything I’ve learned through the past 4 years of “Winging It”

Since getting my Miniature Lop named Riley, I have had tons of questions about what she is like and what it is like to be a bunny mom. Without a doubt, owning a rabbit is way less common than owning a cat or dog! Strangely enough, in the past few years it seems like owning bunnies have become more popular. This could be due to more people realizing what awesome pets they make or it could be the fact that I am more aware of fellow bunny owners. Who knows!

When I bought my rabbit, I was 20 years old and had just started my Junior year of College. For some reason, I had spent the summer wanting a bunny despite the fact that I thought they seemed kind of mean! During the fall of 2014, I spent many hours hunched over my laptop scanning my College’s Free & For Sale page looking at cute bunnies for sale. I even got as far as dragging my roommates to a random apartment to look at a bunny that I was contemplating getting. I ended up finding a pet store in my local College town that had a pen full of baby rabbits. I found a cute, grey one that I liked and drove various friends over to the pet store to tell me what they thought. After my third visit, I skipped my lecture class and drove over to pick up my bunny! Looking back, I should have purchased a bunny from a Humane Society but as awful as it sounds (especially because I've been volunteering at Humane Societies for a few years now), I have never adopted a pet in that way before.

The responsible, adult thing to do would have been to discuss this situation with my parents and do a lot of research beforehand. I am a somewhat impulsive person so instead, I spontaneously bought a bunny and literally bought all of the supplies the day before. Also, I don’t remember doing any research ahead of time and didn’t even start out with a bunny cage (it was some used dog crate/cage I found for free online). Since getting Riley, I have a learned a LOT through trial and error and a lot of online research. For those of you who have asked or are curious, here are a lot of the things I learned about having a bunny that would have been helpful to know beforehand! I’ve also included some frequently asked questions further down in this post. Thank you again to everyone who responded to my Instagram Story with all of their bunny questions!

1. Getting them spayed or neutered is EXPENSIVE! It cost me $495 to get Riley fixed and at the time, I had to borrow the money from my mom (I was a broke College student at the time but don’t worry, I paid her back with my first tax return!). Although pricey, getting your rabbit fixed is important so they can live a long and healthy life.

2. They are the sweetest creatures! There is something very calming and wise about rabbits that is unlike any other animal I have owned

3. Bunnies can be very affectionate and they are social animals! Although they do not always want to be cuddled and touched (like humans?), Riley has times where she wants to cuddle and receive nose pets. She also loves giving bunny kisses to the extent where I have to lock her up in her cage sometimes because the licking gets soooo annoying!

4. Bunny-proof everything! I have never had a baby but I would assume it is pretty similar. Objects that Riley has destroyed include: multiple computer and phone charges, shoes, handbags, books, carpet and even my box spring for my bed etc.

5. Carrots are actually not that great for bunnies. Similar to the belief that milk is good for cats, carrots are not that great for rabbits. Although they LOVE them and will love you for giving them a carrot, carrots are very sweet and should only be given in small pieces as an occasional treat

6. Bunnies are very active in the evenings and mornings. There was a 2 week period over this past summer where Riley woke me up every morning at 4:30am much to my dismay though just in time to watch the sun rise

7. They are hella smart! Not only is Riley litter box trained, I also bought her a logic game meant for dogs and she totally mastered it. She has also learned her name though, unlike a cat or dog, she does not come with called but instead will perk up an ear.

8. Cage necessities should include a water bottle, a litter box with a metal cover, some toys, timothy hay, dry food and a bed/mat so they can give their feet a break from the harsh metal wiring. Some owners don’t do a litter box with a cover but I had to because otherwise Riley likes to dig and kick all of her litter EVERYWHERE

9. They are not a good pet for children! For some reason many parents think it is a great idea to buy a cute bunny rabbit for their child as a present. Honestly having a bunny is way more work than owning a cat and in some ways, owning a dog. You constantly need to clean their litter box and cage and let them out to run around and play. Bunnies also will bite and nip which could be a traumatic experience for a child.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How much do they cost? In general they are pretty affordable! Every 8 weeks I order Riley’s food, litter and treats from Chewy for under $50. Once a year I also take her to the vet which is about $57. Starting next year I will be taking her to the vet twice a year as advised for rabbits over 5 years of age. The most expensive thing was getting her fixed but if you buy them from a Humane Society, they should already have been neutered or spayed

Where does Riley live/sleep? Riley has always lived in my room! She recently got an upgrade and now lives in a two bedroom outdoor hutch that I keep inside. Often I will leave her door and her ramp open so she can come and go as she pleases! In one of the rooms in the hutch, I bought her a sherpa dog bed which is where she will usually sleep

Both Riley and I love this hutch because it gives her a lot of room and it matches my bedroom furniture. It also gives her more privacy depending on if she wants to be in her bedroom or out in the main space. For reference, I got the largest size but it comes smaller as well! You can shop it below!

How often do you feed her? I feed her dry food every morning and evening and then make sure she has hay all the time. As a treat I will give her some fresh lettuce and occasionally a few bites of banana which is her favorite

Do they get sick easily? So far Riley has never been sick! It did take her a few days to recover from her surgery when she got spayed but after a few days she was back to normal. Keeping her inside definitely helps but unlike cats and dogs, they do not need regular flea medicine or anything like that.

Is it possible to own a bunny and still work full time? Yes! I work full time and also am busy with blog stuff but still have time for Riley. The great thing about bunnies is they are pretty good at taking care of themselves. Whenever possible, I will leave her cage open so she can get exercise and I play with her every evening. I do think she gets bored sometimes without another bunny to talk and play with

How do you know what she is saying? The super weird thing for me is that they do not talk! If you hear a bunny make a vocal noise, it is probably because it is dying or terrified. Bunny body language is also very different from other animals so it took me a lot of research to understand what Riley was doing and how to try to communicate with her.

Where do I get one? Like any type of pet there is always the option to go to a breeder. If you are just looking for a fYou can also often find bunnies at pet stores which is how I got Riley. My biggest recommendation would be to go to a Humane Society though! I paid about $25 for Riley but at the local Humane Society in Oregon, you can get a bunny for $15 and they come fixed and usually trained. This way you give a bunny a home and save about $500!

What kind of bunny do you have and how old is she? Her birthday is in August so she is almost 5 years old this summer. At first we did not know if she was a holland lop or miniature lop (holland lops are smaller) but based on her recent vet visit, we are now pretty sure she is a miniature lop. If they are a lop, they will have the cute, floppy ears!
